A number of stakeholder discussions  will therefore be held. The participants in the first discussion  included technical experts, politicians, legislators and traffic safety  researchers. Road trains promote safer transport since the vehicle  platoons are led by a professional driver in e.g. a truck and  inter-vehicle reaction response times are much quicker. Environmental  impact is reduced since the cars follow close behind each other  and\u0026nbsp;benefit from the lower air drag. The energy saving is expected to be  in the region of up to 20 percent. The estimated fuel consumption  saving for high speed highway operation of road trains is in the region  of 20 percent depending on vehicle spacing and geometry. Safety benefits  will arise from the reduction of accidents caused by driver action and  driver fatigue. The utilization of existing road capacity will also be  increased with a potential consequential reduction in journey times. For  users of the technology, the practical attractions of a smoother, more  predicable and lower cost journey which offers the opportunity of  additional free time will be considerable. Each car measures the distance, speed and direction and adjusts to the car in front. All vehicles are totally detached and can leave the procession at any time. But once in the platoon, drivers can relax and do other things while the platoon proceeds towards its long haul destination.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe tests carried out included a lead vehicle and single following car. The steering wheel of the following car moves by itself as the vehicle smoothly follows the lead truck around the country road test track. The driver is able to drink coffee or read a paper, using neither hand nor foot to operate his vehicle.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EPlatooning is designed to improve a number of things: Firstly road safety, since it minimises the human factor that is the cause of at least 80 percent of the road accidents. Secondly, it saves fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions with up to 20 percent. It is also convenient for the driver because it frees up time for other matters than driving. And since the vehicles will travel in highway speed with only a few meters gap, platooning may also relieve traffic congestion.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe technology development is well underway and can most likely go into production in a few years time. To define a set of acceptable platooning strategies that will allow road trains to operate on public highways without changes to the road and roadside infrastructure.\u003Cbr \/\u003E2. The estimated fuel consumption saving for high speed highway operation of road trains is in the region of 20 percent depending on vehicle spacing and geometry. Safety benefits will arise from the reduction of accidents caused by driver action and driver fatigue. The utilization of existing road capacity will also be increased with a potential consequential reduction in journey times. For users of the technology, the practical attractions of a smoother, more predicable and lower cost journey which offers the opportunity of additional free time will be considerable. The radar and camera continuously monitor the road in front of the car. The radar's task is to detect objects and measure the distance to them. The camera determines what type of objects they are.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn an emergency situation, the driver is first alerted by an audible warning together with a flashing light in the windscreen's head-up display. In order to prompt an immediate, intuitive reaction, the visual warning is designed to look like a brake light coming on. If the driver does not respond to the warning and the system assesses that a collision is imminent, the car's brakes are applied with full braking power.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\"Active brake deployment requires that the object is confirmed by both the radar and the camera. The speed of the car is of considerable significance to the outcome of an accident and the risk of a pedestrian being killed in an accident at 50 kilometres per hour is 85 percent higher compared to if the speed is 25 kilometres per hour.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\"Our aim is that this new technology should help the driver avoid collisions with pedestrians at speeds below 25 km\/h. If the car is travelling faster, the aim is to reduce the impact speed as much as possible. In most cases, we can reduce the collision force by about 75 percent. Considering the large number of pedestrian fatalities that occur, if we manage to lower the fatality risk by 20 percent this new function will make a big difference. The aim is to create as close a resemblance to a real human being as possible. At the same time, however, it has to be a tough tool. One highly successful example dates from the 1990s when Swedish researchers developed a crash-test dummy for rear-end collisions.
