Volkswagen delivers 180 cars for Olympic Games

Hong Kong - A month ahead of the Olympics, Volkswagen has unveiled the first convoy vehicles with an Olympic design to the Hong Kong public. The Volkswagen Passat, Passat Variant, and Touran are the three Olympic models in the 180-car support fleet, together with repair and maintenance services, Volkswagen Hong Kong Limited is providing for the Beijing 2008 Equestrian Event as the Official Automobile Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.



Mr Till Scheer, Managing Director of Volkswagen Hong Kong Limited, officially delivered the cars to Mr Lam Woon Kwong, CEO of the Equestrian Events (Hong Kong) of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Company Limited, in a handover ceremony at the new Volkswagen Hong Kong Centre today. The new showroom is located at 223-227 Wanchai Road.

"Volkswagen is proud to be a partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.We share the Olympic spirit. In a month, men and women from all over the world will converge in Beijing to compete for Olympic Gold. They know the meaning of sportsmanship and they know what it means to strive for excellence," Mr Scheer said.

Volkswagen has been in China for more than 20 years and is the largest and most successful automaker in the country. As the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Partner, Volkswagen will provide financial, automotive and other levels of support for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), the China Olympic Committee, as well as the Chinese Olympic teams participating in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games and 2008 Olympic Games, including the Equestrian Event taking place in Hong Kong.

"Our sponsorship of the Beijing 2008 Olympics is our way of demonstrating our community spirit with the people of China, which we plan to continue for many more years to come," Mr Scheer said. "We are very pleased to be able to do our part to spread the spirit of the Olympic Games in Hong Kong as well as in mainland China."

Volkswagen also shares the BOCOG's objectives for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"Green Olympics, High Tech Olympics and People's Olympics" – these are all are in line with Volkswagen's long-standing belief and efforts in the areas of environmental protection, technological advancement and community focus," Mr Scheer said.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen conducted its Green Future Environmental Initiatives in seven Olympic cities including Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the initiative aimed to teach children about environmental protection and the Olympics.

The 180 Volkswagen cars for the Beijing 2008 Equestrian Event are part of the 6,000 vehicle commitment Volkswagen has made to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Almost 1,000 Volkswagen vehicles are being provided to accompany the Olympic torch in its journey through Hong Kong and mainland China from May 2 to August 8, and 5,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been provided to BOCOG for use as official vehicles during the Olympics.
