Next Mercedes SLK to offer a diesel

STUTTGART : November 6, 2008 - The next Mercedes SLK premium roadster, due in spring 2010, will come with an optional diesel.

A Mercedes source confirms that the redesigned SLK will offer the all-new diesel used in the recently launched C250 CDI. That is a 2.2-liter, 4-cylinder twin-turbo unit rated at 204 horsepower and 369 lb.-feet of torque.

Mercedes claims the new diesel, which it calls BlueEfficiency, obtains 54.3 mpg in the C250 while emitting just 138g/km of carbon-dioxide.

The new diesel is "perfect" for the SLK, the source said. Output is high, it runs smoothly, and it's appropriately fuel-efficient for the times, he said.

With the new model, Mercedes will have a rival to the Audi TT TDI in its lineup.
