WOLFSBURG/BERLIN : November 25, 2008 - Volkswagen presents the next generation of Golf TwinDrive, a plug-in hybrid drive.

The Golf TwinDrive is the result of a partnership between VW and the German government, which provided VW with “double-digit millions” for the project and to help determine how to get the most efficiently recharge plug-in hybrid vehicles. In all, 20 Golf TwinDrives will be produced for test fleet services in Berlin next year.

"For TwinDrive, the electric motor of the powertrain in the context of reducing primary energy demand an important role. The Golf TwinDrive combined in this context, the idea of a purely electrical short mobility, with the long-range driving" explains Prof. Dr. Juergen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research.

No mileage figures have been released for the Golf TwinDrive, but a new round of testing is expected to begin next year. If all goes better, VW could release its first plug-in hybrid sometime in 2010.
