STUTTGART : Dec. 09, 2008 - As the first Australian, Alexander Davison (29) won the Porsche Cup, which has been awarded annually to the most successful driver of privately-entered racing cars by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, since 1970. At the season-closing “Motorsports Night” celebration in Weissach, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Supervisory Board Chairman of Porsche AG and Porsche SE, presented Davison with the coveted challenge cup and the key to a Porsche 911 Carrera S worth around 120,000 Euro. Great racing drivers like Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Bernd Schneider, Bob Wollek, Henri Pescarolo, and Marc Lieb are amongst the former winners of the Porsche Cup.


Davison earned his Porsche Cup points at the wheel of a ca. 465 hp 911 GT3 RSR in numerous GT championships and long distance races. In the European Le Mans Series the Australian Carrera Cup Champion of 2004 secured the vice championship. Also at the American Le Mans Series' Sebring 12 hour race the tall racing pro from Melbourne came second. His guest appearance in the FIA GT Championship concluded with the GT2 win at Nogaro. Davison finished the Le Mans 24 hour race fifth.

“It will be almost possible to repeat such a season,” said Davison at the awards ceremony. “Christmas came three weeks early for me this year. I won the Porsche Cup, and Dr. Wolfgang Porsche himself handed me the keys of my dream car.“

Germany's Dirk Werner ranked second in the 2008 Porsche Cup. Werner shone at the wheel of a 911 GT3 RSR in the ALMS, winning the Road America round and securing eighth place overall in the Grand-Am GT class driving a 911 GT3 Cup. Johannes van Overbeek (USA) claimed third in the Porsche Cup after having won it last year. Van Overbeek finished third in the GT2 class of the ALMS at the wheel of a GT3 RSR. At the Daytona 24 hour race he brought his TRG 911 GT3 Cup home fourth.

The 2008 Porsche Cup carries a record total value of 253,000 Euro, with positions two to ten receiving prize money. Porsche awards points in the competition for the title of the year's best private racing driver for successes in prototype and grand touring race series as well as at endurance races.
