Mitsubishi introduces the most extreme version to date of its Lancer Evolution X model. The new Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 by WRC Developments tops the iconic Lancer Evolution X range with its sensational 403bhp output from Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre turbocharged, intercooled four-cylinder 4B11 DOHC MIVEC petrol engine. Mated to a full-time four-wheel drive system for maximum traction and grip this new model continues the Lancer Evolution’s lineage as a performance car that’s no respecter of reputations; the FQ-400 offering performance to humble exotic cars costing many multiples of its £49,999 list price. All while bringing the passenger and luggage carrying advantages of a conventional five-seat saloon car.
Engine
A development of the Lancer Evolution X’s 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovate Valve timing Electronic Control) turbocharged, intercooled 4B11 the FQ-400 develops 403bhp at 6,500rpm and peak torque of 387lb.ft (525Nm) at 3,500rpm. The FQ-400’s powerplant offers its extraordinary output with excellent low-and mid-range flexibility to make it as tractable and friendly around town as it is explosive and responsive on the open road.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged unit is able to deliver its sensational output in the FQ-400 thanks to a number of detailed revisions. A bespoke hybrid turbo conversion with low friction bearings for quickened response and reduced turbo lag is fitted, it featuring an extreme temperature exhaust turbine and strengthened thrust bearing. Feeding cooling air to the turbocharger is a revised intercooler with greater airflow: a racing suction kit also increasing airflow to the engine. Removing the exhaust gasses as efficiently as possible is a new 3” diameter high-flow stainless steel system incorporating high flow catalytic convertors and a centre exit tailpipe; this meeting all noise requirements for road and track.
Motorsport specification high-flow fuel injectors and a re-mapped ECU programme are also included in revisions made to the Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 by WRC Developments’ die-cast aluminium block – the FQ-400’s hugely advanced powerplant punching well above its light weight.
Drivetrain
The FQ-400’s output is managed by Mitsubishi’s acclaimed Super-All Wheel Control (SAWC) drivetrain, which has been developed to deliver ‘intuitive handling’ and rock solid stability. It extracts the maximum potential of all four tyres and wheels using an electronically controlled system, this faithfully transmitting the driver’s intent to the vehicle. The sophisticated S-AWC system incorporates an Active Centre Differential (ACD), Active Yaw Control (AYC), Active Stability Control (ASC) and Sports ABS and is fitted with a quick-shifting five-speed manual gearbox.
In detail
- Active Centre Differential (ACD) - The ACD uses an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch to optimise the front to rear torque split in all conditions.
- Active Yaw Control (AYC) - Using a torque transfer mechanism working in the rear differential the AYC controls rear wheel torque to limit yaw movements and enhance the FQ-400's cornering performance.
- Active Stability Control (ASC) - The ASC stabilises the vehicle attitude while maintaining optimum traction by regulating engine power and braking force at each wheel. Assisting in control in extreme or emergency situations ASC can be switched off if required.
- Sport ABS - Preventing the wheels from locking under heavy load or on slippery surfaces Sport ABS allows the driver to maintain directional control and helps keep the vehicle stable.
In addition S-AWC offers the driver the choice of three settings depending on the current road surface conditions.
- Tarmac for dry, paved surfaces
- Gravel for wet or unmade surfaces
- Snow for snow covered surfaces
Chassis
Superior wheel control and unrivalled handling and response is possible thanks not just to S-AWC but also the Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 by WRC Developments’ suspension. Mated to the Lancer Evolution X’s super-stiff body the front suspension comprises of MacPherson struts while the rears suspension features a low-mount multi-link arrangement. Eibach Suspension Springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers feature front and rear. The FQ-400’s more extreme nature sees the front suspension lowered by 30mm and the rear 25mm, reducing body roll and increasing cornering capability while providing similar road compliance as its Evolution X relatives. The FQ400’s wider track (+20mm on the front and +20mm on the rear) also enhance its agility, cornering stability and steering response, while Toyo Proxes R1R 245/40 ZR18 93W tyres increase grip and control at FQ-400’s heightened limits.
Brakes
The sensational performance from the Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 by WRC Developments’ engine is matched by an enhanced braking system on the front. The revised brakes feature Alcon 6 piston Mono-Block Callipers manufactured using aerospace grade aluminium alloy to deliver maximum rigidity for firm, consistent pedal travel. The 365x32mm sealed floating discs are gripped by high performance pads, stainless steel braided hoses replacing the conventional piping.
Styling
Unique styling and performance enhancing details mark out the range-topping Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 inside and out. The front and rear bumpers are made from lightweight composite materials, the front featuring the Evolution X’s trademark ‘Jet Fighter’ grille and a lower lip spoiler made of carbon fibre composite. The rear of the FQ-400 features a distinctively shaped centrally mounted exhaust finisher and carbon fibre rear diffuser that’s designed to create better airflow around the rear of the car. The rear wing features a gurney strip addition, while a roof-mounted toothed ‘Vortex Generator’ assists in airflow management at the rear of the Evolution X FQ-400. In profile the FQ-400 features new composite side-skirts with rear air intakes the FQ-400’s stance enhanced by its lower suspension and lightweight SL Corse 18-inch nine-spoke alloy wheels.

The tenth version of Mitsubishi’s iconic Lancer Evolution models has a new performance flagship model to top its range. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 by WRC Developments is the fastest and most extreme version of Mitsubishi’s motorsport derived machine. With 403bhp and 387lb.ft of torque on offer from its advanced, lightweight aluminium 2.0-litre turbocharged MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) petrol engine the FQ-400 is able to reach 62mph from standstill in an estimated 3.8 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 155mph
where permitted. Ensuring all the FQ-400’s power is put to good use is a Mitsubishi’s sophisticated Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel-drive system which appropriates power to the wheels that can best use it, giving the FQ-400 quite sensational cross-country performance. The S-AWC system combines a number of electronic systems that both enhance the FQ-400’s performance and safety, with Active Stability Control and Active Centre Differential, Active Yaw Control and Sport ABS giving the FQ-400 incredible cornering ability, traction and grip. Depending on the conditions the driver can select the most suitable set-up for the S-AWC system, three choices – Tarmac, Gravel and Snow being offered via the wheel-mounted button and displayed in the central instrument binnacle.
Increasing the FQ-400’s cornering ability even further over its FQ relatives is a wider track and lowered suspension featuring Eibach springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers. Lightweight 18-inch, nine spoke alloy wheels fitted with Toyo Proxes R1R tyres enhance the FQ-400’s grip, giving it sharper cornering response on the road and more incisive steering. The enhanced agility and performance is backed by a revised braking system which uses aerospace grade aluminium alloys and floating sealed discs grabbed by high performance pads.
To achieve the incredible 403bhp from just 2.0-litres Mitsubishi has had to significantly revise the FQ-400’s advanced powerplant. Motorsport specification high-flow fuel injectors are fitted to the aluminium cylinder head and a new hybrid turbocharger is also fitted. The higher specification turbocharger features low-friction bearings, a high temperature turbine and strengthened thrust bearing to increase response and reduce turbo lag. Feeding the turbocharger cooled air, improving its performance and efficiency, is an enhanced intercooler, while the exhaust’s gasses flow from the engine via a 3-inch diameter high flow stainless steel piping and catalytic convertor before exiting through a centrally positioned exhaust.
Mitsubishi has remapped the Engine Control Unit (ECU) extensively with over 500 hours of development time to allow its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to not just produce it’s exceptional output but to do so with excellent driveability. The FQ-400’s acceleration is sensational, it pulling hard through the gears regardless of engine revs. With peak torque of 387lb.ft on offer from just 3,500rpm, the FQ-400 is just as able to trickle through town traffic as it is talking a rally special stage.
It looks every bit the rally refugee too, the FQ-400 building on the already aggressive style of its Lancer Evolution X FQ relatives. A heavily vented bonnet helps heat escape from the FQ-400’s turbocharged engine and a new lightweight composite front bumper incorporating Mitsubishi’s trademark ‘Jet Fighter’ grille features carbon-fibre elements on its leading edges. Additional lighting and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights mark out the FQ-400’s nose, its added aggressiveness further enhanced by a 30mm drop in front ride height. Composite side skirts, a re-styled rear bumper with a carbon fibre diffuser, a rear wing incorporating a gurney strip and a roof-mounted ‘Vortex Generator’ all help manage airflow and cooling.
Behind the 18-inch lightweight, nine spoke alloy wheels it’s possible to see the Alcon brakes on the front, while the Toyo Proxes R1R tyres underline the FQ-400’s potency with their aggressive ‘cut slick’ tread pattern. Inside, the driver is held tightly against the FQ-400’s sensational accelerative, braking and cornering forces in Recaro bucket sports seats, the range-topping Lancer Evolution X also gaining an FQ-400 liveried handbrake handle and carbon fibre gearknob.
Despite its obvious focus the FQ-400’s suspension offers compliance thanks to the Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shock Absorbers, the FQ-400’s usefulness as a daily driver not compromised overly thanks to Mitsubishi’s chassis tuning. The stiff bodywork not only provides an exceptionally rigid platform for the suspension to work, but excellent crash-worthiness, the Lancer Evolution X attaining a five-star score in Euro NCAP’s independent crash tests. The FQ-400’s S-AWC and its incorporated stability, traction and braking systems helping avoid an accident in the first place. Even so there’s reassurance of seven airbags, seat belt pretensioners and ISO Fix child seating as included in its standard specification.
Standard equipment for the range-topping Lancer Evolution X model is comprehensive, the FQ-400 coming with Bluetooth hands-free telephone connection, a CD-tuner with 30 Gig hard drive, DVD satellite navigation and privacy glass. Convenience features like remote central locking, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers increase the FQ400’s ease of use, the huge performance it offers not coming at the expense of usefulness. Like its Lancer Evolution X relatives it features comfortable seating for five as well as a usefully sized boot, the FQ-400 bringing all the convenience of the standard saloon car it’s based upon – but with explosive performance potential.
Standard it’s not though, instead the FQ-400 by WRC Developments is a standard setter, with performance that’s the measure of any rival and many exotic sports and supercars costing many multiples of its £49,999 list price. Available from June 2009, the FQ-400 by WRC Developments is covered by a three year / 36,000 mile warranty.
