Thailand exports rise 25% to top local sales

Bangkok, Thailand. -- Exports of fully built vehicles in the first four months of this year increased 25% from the same period last year, overtaking domestic unit sales. Thailand-based automakers shipped 247,051 units abroad from January to April for a total value of 109.33 billion baht, up 25.21% year-on-year, said Surapong Phaisitpattanapong, a spokesman for the automobile industry club of the of Federation of Thai Industries.

Domestic vehicle sales in the period rose 14.5% to 215,265 units.

Engine exports doubled in value from a year earlier to 5.75 billion baht, while exports of other auto parts rose 34.5% to 40.85 billion baht and spare parts by 33.9% to 2.84 billion baht.

Mr.Surapong said total vehicle production in the January-April period increased 23.3% year-on-year to 464,398 units. Of the total, 128,833 units were cars, a 47.65% increase, and 335,334 units were commercial vehicles, up 15.94%.

Production of one-ton pickup trucks, the main commercial vehicles, rose 16.7% to 328,990 units.

Production of motorcycles increased only 1.3% to 1.07 million units, of which 579,167 were fully built bikes and 490,299 were assembly kits.

Exports of motorcycles for the period totalled 541,316 units, down 1.96% but the value rose 8% to 8.84 billion baht. Other motorcycle parts exports increased 48.2% to 6.73 billion baht.
