Volkswagen Scirocco Cup China 2009 – successful start

SHANGHAI : July 26, 2009). The Volkswagen Scirocco Cup China successfully started its debut season this weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit. Twenty-one drivers from Asia, Europe and Canada provided more than 10,000 spectators with thrilling motorsport. The winners of the first two races in 2009 are Kevin Tse and Patrick Boulard.


"We view the Scirocco Cup as both a sporting and cultural bridge between China and Germany. At the same time this one-make cup also underlines Volkswagen's innovative, passionate and dynamic involvement in China,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. The Scirocco Cup representative in China, Weiming Soh, also praised the excellent work of everybody involved in this project.

The Volkswagen Scirocco Cup China is the first one-make cup to use the new Scirocco as base vehicle. In the process, Volkswagen continues a long one-make cup tradition supporting maximum performance parity. The Lupo Cup, the New Beetle Cup and especially the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, established many years ago in Germany, and the US American Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup form the base for this model .

Volkswagen Motorsport developed Sciroccos, prepared and fielded by a single organisation, are used in China. A total of 30 examples of the powerful 200 hp touring car equipped with a 2.0 litre TSI engine were built.

Two eleven lap races were on the agenda for the first race weekend. The 30-year old Chinese Kevin Tse secured pole position in qualifying and converted this to take victory in the first race. Ringo Chong from Singapore and the Italian Angelo Negro also mounted the podium. "It's a personal honour to have won the first race of the new cup,” said Tse at the finish.

In the second race the eight highest placed finishers from the first race started in reverse order. Patrick Boulard, who took the chequered flag in eighth position in race one, knew exactly how to take advantage of this situation. The 43-year old Frenchman started the race from pole position and still held this position by a good two seconds at the finish from the Chinese drivers Robert Lee and George Chou. Winner of the first race, Kevin Tse, was fourth.
