Audi Design grand piano : tradition and innovation

Audi Design - Bosendorfer Grand Piano

  • Innovative concert grand piano with perfect Bösendorfer sound
  • Respect for history: a sensitive approach by Audi Design
  • World premiere at the Audi centenary on July 16
INGOLSTADT : July 07, 2009 - A concert grand piano is impressively large, usually black and has three legs to support the body with its typically curved sides. For more than 100 years, the complex internal mechanisms of these instruments have ensured their magnificent sound as well as determining the overall shape. The long tradition that has led to the grand piano has included many baroque versions that are not ideally matched to Audi’s design language. Despite this, the Audi Design Studio team in Munich decided to tackle the task of housing a concert grand piano in an Audi “outer skin”.

The question was: where to start? How could Audi’s design philosophy be interpreted for a grand piano – an instrument with a closely defined form and function? An active process began, during which the designers came up with a surprising number of design approaches. In due course it fell to pianoforte manufacturer Bösendorfer to build the first “Audi Design grand piano”. At a price of approximately 100,000 euros, the Vienna-based company will be including this design icon in its high-quality catalogue of instruments from July 16 onwards – the day of its world premiere.

“You can imagine the respect with which we approached the challenge of redesigning a musical instrument” says Wolfgang Egger, Head of Audi Group Design. But he and his team made a virtue out of necessity: “The limitations we faced were necessary as a means of stimulating our creativity. We were obliged to study the instrument in depth, and develop an all-embracing concept from the very start. The project was a useful source of experience for our young designers, and will benefit them later when they work on car design.”

The team from Design naturally cooperated closely with the specialists at Bösendorfer, since Audi itself is clearly not in a position to build grand pianos. Bösendorfer, on the other hand, has stood for excellent quality and correspondingly good acoustics since 1828. For Audi, the top priority was not to exert any adverse influence on the instrument’s sound. In the piano workshops in Vienna, the highest standards in both materials and workmanship apply. These enormously complex articles, with very delicate mechanical elements, call for precision craft skills, with tolerances down to one five-hundredth of a millimetre. The strings, from treble to bass, can exert a tension of as much as 20 tons on the cast metal frame inside the soundbox. The vibration frequencies and sound quality have to be precisely correct; there is no room for compromises.

In the end, the Audi designers walked this tightrope with success. Although various elements directly associated with the case of the piano were modified, the acoustics were unaffected. But the Audi Design grand piano is certainly “different”, even at first glance. “Generous surface areas ensure formal clarity; there are no decorative applications, the edges and lines are sharply drawn, the joints logically positioned. All these are important aspects of the Audi design,” says Designer Philip Schlesinger, who implemented the project at the Concept Design Studio in Munich. One of the most striking features is the lid, which extends without a break down to the base – an Audi innovation that yields a large, one-piece surface.

From above, the lid is seen to be recessed into the main case. In the side view, the elegant curve of the treble side is not interrupted by a joint line. The underside of the case is allowed to rise moderately at the rear, away from the performer. This is an optical device: “It draws the observer’s attention subtly to the pianist,” Schlesinger explains. To reduce the sense of weight on the treble side, a slim aluminium-look leg is used. The same simple style with its hint of the technical world is applied to the pedal lyre.

The keyboard has no wings at the ends. In the same spirit of purist design, the designers have concealed the hinges in the lid above the keyboard. The lid itself can be opened at an unobtrusively integrated handle. Another Audi idea is to be found directly beneath the keyboard – one that does away with the risk of bruised or scratched knees: “The lower front edge of the keyboard housing and the beam used to make it more rigid have been rounded off. This new outline is distinctly better from an ergonomic point of view: it protects the pianist’s knees,” says Schlesinger.

When the main lid has been raised and secured with the two-position metal prop, the interior catches the eye immediately. Whereas the classic piano black finish predominates on the outside, the designers have chosen typical Audi colours for the interior. The cast frame is in grey instead of the usual bronze colour, and the felt damper strips in natural white instead of wine red. The Audi Design signet has been greatly reduced in emphasis to harmonise with the instrument’s overall appearance: it appears on the right front edge of the keyboard lid as a precisely formed, polished stainless steel inlay. As on all pianos from this Vienna manufacturer, the Bösendorfer name is displayed above the centre of the keyboard.

The decision to design an Audi concert grand piano is a logical consequence of many years of cultural involvement by the brand with the four-ring emblem. This includes the high-quality jazz meetings at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt where the Audi Design grand piano will in future be seen and heard.

TECHART launches performance and styling upgrades for Porsche Cayenne Diesel combining low CO2 and low running costs with style and high performance, for new and existing vehicles

A range of tuning and styling options for the Cayenne Diesel has been introduced by TECHART, the German Porsche tuning company renowned for creating some of the world’s finest bespoke vehicles. Upgrades covering everything from sports-orientated engine and chassis conversions to luxury interiors and aerodynamic styling are available in the UK from Porsche specialist Tech9 Motorsport.

“With the top three podium positions at Le Mans won by diesel powered racecars this year, it is proven beyond any doubt that this is a superb fuel for very high performance motoring,” says Phil Hindley, managing director of Tech9 Motorsport. “Add in their low CO2 output, which translates to low benefit-in-kind taxation, their excellent fuel economy and high residual values, and we can see why there is so much excitement about this car.”

TECHART’s upgrade range has been developed to provide subtle enhancements to power, handling and styling, complemented by a range of interior trim options that can take the vehicle from comfortable to opulent. Every component is designed and manufactured to the same high standards as the original equipment parts and integration with the vehicle is rigorously engineered to ensure that safety and durability remain at the very high levels originally specified by Porsche.

Specially developed for the Cayenne Diesel, Aerokit 1 includes a new front panel with a deeper front spoiler, elegantly integrated driving and fog lamps and additional cooling vents to help keep temperatures under control during consistently hard driving. Deeper sills help manage under body airflow and at the rear a new apron with integrated diffuser completes the underbody aerodynamics. Airflow behind the vehicle is managed by a low drag roof spoiler. All exterior styling components are manufactured from polyurethane to ensure long term durability and to provide a smooth, high quality appearance.

For cars fitted with air suspension, Aerokit 1 also includes a unique TECHART suspension control module that lowers the vehicle, reducing roll and further improving aerodynamics. When the vehicle is stationary, the control system lowers the vehicle a little more to improve access and to further improve the low, aerodynamic look.

Aerokit 1 also adds headlight and rearlight surround trims, 21” alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Diamaris 4X4 XL 295/35 R21 tyres, twin double oval exhaust pipes, a three-spoke TECHART sports steering wheel with the correct Porsche airbag, and interior trim upgrades that include light-weight aluminium pedals and footrest and leather edged luxury logo floormats. Further options include 22” body colour wheels with 295/30 R22 Continental tyres, an Aero or Turbo-look bonnet, plus a vast range of interior options from individual trim components to sumptuous full leather interiors created at TECHART’s world-class coachworks in Stuttgart.

To complement the body and interior upgrades, owners can specify TECHART’s TA 055/D1 power kit, which boosts the power of the Cayenne’s 3.0 litre diesel engine from 176 kW (240 bhp) to 213 kW (290 bhp) and takes torque from 550 Nm to 630 Nm at 2,200 rpm. More than 500 Nm is available from around 1,100rpm to beyond 4,000rpm, providing tremendous flexibility and refinement. CO2 emissions are unchanged at 244 g/km and fuel consumption on the combined cycle is an excellent 30.4 mpg.

Tech9’s Phil Hindley says that the Powerkit makes the Cayenne Diesel effortlessly quick. “The 0-60 time drops from 8.3 seconds to 7.7 seconds, an impressive improvement, but the real benefit is that the huge torque and very flat delivery provides impressive acceleration from any speed. It feels more like a big V8 than a highly efficient diesel V6.”

Owners who have chosen the Powerkit can enhance engine bay aesthetics by specifying the TECHART engine styling pack, which includes a carbon fibre engine cover with red embellishments and a metalised TECHART logo.

Tech9 can supply a new TECHART Diesel Cayenne with Aerokit 1 (including the exterior and interior upgrades) from £53,000 or from £55,500 with Aerokit 1 and Powerkit TA 055/D1. Existing vehicles can be fitted with Aerokit 1 from £15,000 and with Powerkit TA 055/D1 from £2,500. Both packs are available individually.

TECHART supplies powertrain, styling, interior and chassis enhancements for the full range of current and recent Porsches. The company was formed in 1987 to create vehicles that blend advanced technology with artistic excellence (hence TECHART) and is registered as an independent manufacturer. TECHART recently repeated its 2008 victory at the Tuner Grand Prix at Hockenheim, winning three classes in the June 2009 event, claiming overall victory and confirming the firm as the world’s leading developer of ultra-high performance tuned Porsches.

The success story continues: MINI makes 1.5 million

Ian Robertson and 1,5 millionth MINI at Oxford plant

OXFORD : July 6, 2009 - Just weeks after celebrating MINI’s 50th birthday, another milestone was reached today as the 1.5 millionth car rolled off Plant Oxford’s production line, since the launch of the new MINI in 2001.

Business Minister Ian Lucas MP, responsible for the automotive sector at the government department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and BMW Group board member Ian Robertson joined a group of Plant Oxford apprentices as the Chili red MINI Clubman cleared the end of the production line. The car is destined for a British customer.

Since production started at Oxford in 2001, MINI has become a global phenomenon, winning plaudits and awards all over the world and is now sold in more than 80 countries, with its most recent launch in Brazil.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, said: “This is a great day for the plant and a wonderful milestone to reach in the 50th birthday year of MINI. The very first classic Mini rolled off the production line here at this plant on 8 May 1959.

“It was wonderful to see the passion that owners feel for MINI at the car’s recent birthday celebrations at Silverstone, when 25,000 people from around the world joined the party. It is a privilege to be part of the heritage and future of this car.”

Robertson added, “This is a tough time for the car industry and no business is immune from its challenges, but MINI is an extremely resilient brand with huge customer appeal and we have seen a strengthening order bank in recent months. We will launch a number of new models in the coming years and we are optimistic for the future.”

BMW Group has invested more than £380m in Plant Oxford since 2001 and a further £100 million in the Hams Hall and Swindon plants, which make up the MINI Production Triangle in the UK. The Group employs more than 7,000 people in the UK, and its activities account for 1 percent of the country’s GDP. The company has invested more than £1 billion in the UK since 2000.

Business Minister Ian Lucas said: "The Mini has been a symbol of British design and engineering for 50 years, and I am delighted to hear that it continues to succeed today. Part of the longevity of the Mini has come from the company’s ability to innovate – the redesign that was launched in 2001, the focus on reducing CO2, and the electric Minis that over the next year we will be seeing on the streets as part of the Government’s Low Carbon Vehicles Demonstrator. The Government will do all it can to support the British automotive industry as it makes the necessary transition to the low carbon future."

Recently, it was announced that BMW Group will trial an all-electric MINI in the UK – the MINI E - having won Government backing through the Technology Strategy Board and regional development agency SEEDA. BMW will lead a consortium, including Scottish and Southern Energy and academic partner Oxford Brookes University to evaluate the social, economic and practical issues of living with an electric vehicle. MINI E is already being trialled in the USA and Germany.

In the 41 years between 1959 and 2000, 5.3 million classic Minis were built, so the total when combined with new MINI volume is 6.8 million cars.

2009 WTCC : SEAT and BMW claim one victory apiece

Gabriele Tarquini - SEAT Sport - SEAT León 2.0 TDI

PORTO, Portugal : June 05, 2009 - SEAT and BMW shared glory in Porto yesterday, claiming one win each, as 120,000 gathered around the Circuito da Boavista during the weekend.

In the first race Gabriele Tarquini converted his pole position to a lights-to-flag solo flight ahead of Chevrolet’s Robert Huff and his own SEAT Sport team-mate Yvan Muller. The second race saw Augusto Farfus’ deliverance after a black period, as the young Brazilian won the WTCC’s 100th race from Muller and Rickard Rydell.

RACE-1 Podium

TARQUINI WINS CHAOTIC RACE 1

Gabriele Tarquini took his second win of the season in an eventful race. Robert Huff came home second and Yvan Muller third. An incident in the first lap saw a massive crash which affected seven drivers (Menu, Monteiro, Ladygin, Engstler, Puyo, Bennani and Boardman).

Before this pile up, Sergio Hernández and Jaap van Lagen had crashed on the straight. Hernández hit the concrete wall sideways at high pace and was taken to the local hospital for x-rays on his left ankle but returned to the track with no treatment needed.

Local driver Tiago Monteiro crossed the line fourth followed by Larini, Gené and Rydell, while Farfus recovered after he received a drive through for causing the accident at the start and inherited eighth position and the pole for Race 2.

Man of the race
In the recent past Gabriele Tarquini hasn’t been able to turn his pole positions into race wins. However today he led the field all the way despite the race suspension and pressure from Huff who stayed close behind him. The experienced Italian driver defended fervently at the start, took control of the restart and his calm head enabled him to take the chequered flag as victor.

Key moment
At turn 10 on lap one Augusto Farfus missed his braking point and hit the rear left of Menu’s car. This sent Menu into the tyres and while Farfus swerved to recover he came into the path of Monteiro. Farfus continued but Monteiro was hit by Larini who too was trying to find a clear path. The pile-up behind resulted in the race being suspended and Farfus being given a drive-through penalty at the restart.

Withdrawals
A. Menu: race incident; J. Van Lagen: race incident; M. Bennani: race incident; S. Hernández: race incident.

RACE-2 Podium

FARFUS WINS THE 100th WTCC RACE

Augusto Farfus is the name that will be in the history books for winning the 100th WTCC race. The BMW Team Germany driver led the pack from lights to flag in a race that saw three serious crashes, two safety car periods and a suspension.

Yvan Muller, current world champion, finished second followed by his SEAT Sport team-mates Rickard Rydell, Jordi Gené and Tiago Monteiro.

After clean opening laps for the entire pack, lap three spelt the end of the race for Nicola Larini and Gabriele Tarquini. The duo was battling at turn five but neither would concede the line meaning they ended up in the tyres. Seconds later Mehdi Bennani went straight at the same corner, avoided the SEAT and Chevrolet but rejoined the track directly in the path of Tom Boardman who could do nothing to avoid him. With a second crash at the same place the safety car was deployed.

The third collision came further down the field on lap nine. Franz Engstler and Félix Porteiro hit each other but both continued. As Engstler picked up his pace again, Menu was on his tail and pushing to get past. The Swiss made contact, spun and crashed into the metal barrier blocking the track to cause the race to be suspended.

Man of the race
Sitting on pole for the 100th race after two catastrophic incidents in the previous two races must have been a tense moment for Augusto Farfus. However as the lights went out he stormed away with determination. The Brazilian had to endure two further restarts but remained focused to reward himself and his team with the ultimate prize of victory and maximum points.

Key moment
Yvan Muller overtook Nicola Larini at turn two on the first lap – a move that showcased his expertise. He was on the inside of the corner and while Larini edged over to take the line, Muller held strong using the wall on his left to resist Larini’s attempt to shut the door on him. This move enabled Muller to move up to second later in the race and take eight valuable points that could prove to be worth their weight in gold at the end of the season.

Withdrawals
J. Lagen: DNS; M. Bennani: race incident; T. Boardman: race incident; N. Larini: race incident; G. Tarquini: race incident; A. Menu: race incident; K. Ladygin: race incident.

MUGEN Euro to Build Highly-tuned Honda Civic Type R Prototype

European Mugen Civic Type R Prototype

MUGEN has confirmed the development of a highly-tuned Honda Civic Type R ‘MUGEN’ concept prototype road car, using the same powertrain as the Civic MUGEN RR saloon launched in 2007 in Japan.

The car is being developed in Japan by MUGEN EURO – the Northampton-based subsidiary of Honda’s long standing tuning partner MUGEN – and will be brought to the UK for testing later in the year. At this stage, the car is being prepared purely as a prototype model.

To enhance the performance of the already-impressive Civic Type R, MUGEN EURO will tune Honda’s 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine to produce more power and torque, as well as developing the brakes, exhaust and suspension. Externally, the Civic will take on an even more aggressive appearance, with a new aerodynamic package including a larger rear boot spoiler.

There are currently no plans for a production model.

Volkswagen launches new range of highly efficient Golf models

Volkswagen Golf SE

  • Most efficient new Golf model available to order now; cars arrive in September
  • Highly efficient as well as practical and conventional to service and maintain
  • Prices start at £17,165 RRP ‘on the road’ for BlueMotion model
  • A new sub-100 g/km variant will be available towards the end of 2009

MILTON KEYNES : July 3, 2009 - Following the launch of the standard sixth generation Golf and the GTI and GTD performance models, Volkswagen is pleased to announce the ‘economy’ range, based on a new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, and which includes a BlueMotion variant.

All the new Golf models with this engine and five-speed manual gearbox achieve CO2 emissions of under 120 g/km, while the new Golf BlueMotion, the most efficient and technologically advanced iteration of the model yet produced, is capable of achieving 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle which equates to a theoretical range of over 800 miles, while emitting just 107 g/km of CO2.

Three versions of the 1.6-litre TDI engine are available to order. The first is an entry-level 90 PS – offered in S trim only – which returns 62.8 mpg on the combined cycle while producing 118 g/km of carbon dioxide. The second has more power at 105 PS and is available in S and SE trim. This has a combined economy figure of 62.8 mpg and a CO2 output of 119 g/km. This engine is also available with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

The third is the 105 PS in BlueMotion guise. This label is now well known as denoting the most efficient and least polluting model in Volkswagen’s range. Although it uses the same basic powerplant as the other new vehicles, the BlueMotion variant has significantly enhanced economy and carbon dioxide figures: 68.9 mpg and 107 g/km.

The gains in efficiency are made possible through a combination of subtle yet effective changes to the vehicle’s drivetrain and aerodynamics. The engine’s five-speed gearbox has longer ratios in third, fourth and fifth gears as well as regenerative braking.

A Stop-Start system is also fitted to the new Golf BlueMotion to improve efficiency further. The system allows the engine to shut down completely when at a standstill before automatically restarting as soon as the driver is ready to move off.

As with all BlueMotion variants, the new Golf features optimised aerodynamics with front-mounted cooling ducts moved to the underside of the vehicle, a ride height lowered by 15 mm and low rolling resistance tyres.

The gains in efficiency do not come at the expense of equipment or safety. The Golf BlueMotion is based on the SE model and as such is fitted with seven airbags, ABS, Electronic Stabilisation Programme, Climatic air conditioning, rain sensors, automatic lights, an iPod compatible CD stereo with eight speakers and cruise control.

All the models detailed here can be ordered now for imminent delivery. BlueMotion models are due to arrive in the UK in September. The 2.0-litre TDI 110 PS engine is no longer available to order in the Golf.

A second phase of Golf BlueMotion models will be introduced at the end of 2009 based on the entry-level S model. These cars are expected to have a CO2 output of 99 g/km and a combined economy figure of over 75 mpg.
