Volvo C30 impresses in a dramatic WTCC debut

Seventh fastest in testing and tenth in qualifying before being pushed off the track by Rickard Rydell.

Volvo C30 at Brands Hatch

Volvo's new Green C30 race car took its debut in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in the seventh race of the series at Brands Hatch this weekend. Volvos priority was to test the new ethanol driven race car against the best in the world. This was a debut which gave both a taste for the future and some drama.

- We are very happy with the weekend. We knew beforehand that a one-off entry in to WTCC would not be easy. Partly because we would race on a completely new tyre for us and partly because we would have a total of 42-45 kilos of extra weight as a debutant with ethanol in the tank. But this only spurred us even more says Derek Crabb, Motorsport Director for Volvo Cars.

Robert Dahlgren managed to qualify tenth out of twenty-six drivers in a qualifying session where the thirteen fastest drivers were within one second. Amongst others, Dahlgren outqualified two of this years absolute dominating drivers in series, SEAT's Gabrielle Tarquini and Rickard Rydell.

The outqualified veteran Rickard Rydell would however reappear in Dahlgren's rear view mirror during the first race heat. After ten laps in to the heat where Dahlgren was fighting for tenth position with James Thompson, Rickard Rydell crashed in to Dahlgren who ended up off the track and had to end the race there. Unfortunately, the car was damaged in a way that could not be repaired in time for the second heat which starts 45 minutes after the end of the first heat.

Despite the dramatic end to the weekend, Volvos Driver Robert Dahlgren is very happy:

- We came here to evaluate and learn. The job was completed as planned and gave us a taste for more. To jump in to WTCC and be in the top ten straight off with a completely new car is good. The crash itself has to be considered as a compliment - if a top-ranked factory drives has to crash in to you to get past, then you know you are doing a good job.

2009 MAZDA vehicles at a glance

2009 Mazda6 US
MAZDA6 Sports Sedan

The 2009 MAZDA6 is all new, and built specifically for the North American market. Lessons learned from the first MAZDA6 and Mazda's newer successful vehicles - especially the Mazda CX-7 and award-winning CX-9 - encouraged a clean-sheet approach to building the best mid-size sports sedan the US market has ever experienced. All efforts have been focused on a single four-door sedan bodystyle offered in two basic series: the MAZDA6 i powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the MAZDA6 s powered by a 3.7-liter V-6. 2008 Mazda Tribute HEV engine room

Tribute HEV

The Tribute Hybrid Electric Vehicle is a "full" hybrid, capable of running on 100 percent electric power up to approximately 25 mph -- maximizing in-city fuel economy and making it one of the least-polluting vehicles sold.

Equipped with standard front-wheel-drive or optional electronic four-wheel-drive, Tribute HEV is available in two trim levels, Touring or Grand Touring. Mirroring design cues shared by its gasoline-powered sibling, Tribute HEV offers a bold, rugged exterior set off by 16-inch alloy wheels and new front and rear fascias, hood, liftgate, body-side molding, power side view mirrors, headlamps, taillamps and standard fog lights.

Highlights of the 2009 Tribute HEV include:
  • A new 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine features Atkinson-cycle combustion for improved efficiency and produces 153 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. At speeds over 25 mph, when maximum acceleration is desired, the 70-kWatt (equivalent to 94 horsepower) electric traction motor also provides an added boost to the drive wheels.
  • A generator-motor recharges the batteries, starts the engine and helps regulate how the two propulsion channels blend together in the transaxle.
  • A special electronically controlled, continuously variable transmission (eCVT) harnesses internal combustion and electric power sources to drive the vehicle.
  • A 330-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack located and sealed at the rear load floor stores electrical energy.
  • An electronic vehicle system controller manages charging, drive assist and engine-starting functions. This device shuts the engine down during coasting and at stoplights to save fuel. It also converts the traction motor into a generator during braking to help recharge the batteries.
  • Two available trim levels -- Touring and Grand Touring
  • Four exterior color choices -- Monterey Gray, Kiwi Green, Brilliant Silver and Blue Spark
New or enhanced for 2009:
  • New 2.5L 4 cylinder Atkinson cycle engine

Both versions are available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The 2009 B-Series Truck remains largely unchanged. To better meet customer demands, the high-end B4000 Cab Plus SE model will be discontinued in the U.S. market.

Mitsubishi Motors announces production, sales and export figures for June 2008 and first six months of calendar 2008

.
TOKYO, July 29, 2008 — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation(MMC) today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for June 2008 and the first six months of calendar 2008.

June 2008
Production: total and in Japan
Total global production came in at 108,603 units, a decline of 7.4 percent over June last year and marking the fourth consecutive monthly decrease. Production volume in Japan at 70,747 units was up 5.1 percent, the 21st consecutive month of year-on-year growth and marking a new record for June since Mitsubishi Motors spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. This growth was driven principally by a 37.5 percent increase in output (15,587 units) of the new Outlander which continues to sell briskly in European and Chinese markets.

Sales in Japan

Vehicle sales in Japan in June totaled 15,705 units, a 12.3 percent decrease year-on-year and the 10th consecutive monthly decline since September 2007. Passenger car (registrations and mini-car) sales of 11,083 units and commercial vehicle sales of 4,622 units were 16.7 percent down and 0.4 percent up respectively on the same month last year. Total registered vehicle sales were 22.6 percent down year-on-year. Total mini-car sales volume was 6.4 percent down despite a 10 percent increase in Pajero Mini and 4 percent increase in Minicab sales.

Production overseas
Overseas production volume totaled 37,856 units, 24.3 percent down over June last year and the fourth consecutive monthly decline. By region, Asia came in with 26,150 units, a 23.8 percent decrease as a 29.3 percent increase in production in Indonesia (KRM*) on the back of healthy sales failed to offset a decrease in production of Proton models with MMC components at Proton in Malaysia. Production in Europe at 4,095 units showed a 25.9 percent decline over June last year as NedCar in The Netherlands geared up for the start of production of the new Outlander. Production in North America at 3,321 units was 44 percent down as production levels were adjusted for slow sales in the U.S.
* KRM: P.T. Krama Yudha Ratu Motors

Export shipments from Japan
Total exports from Japan of 58,524 units were 7.6 percent up on June 2007, marking the 20th consecutive month of year-on-year increases and setting a new record for June since Mitsubishi Motors spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. Exports to Asia at 4,575 units showed a robust 45.3 percent rise over the same period last year driven principally by shipments of the new Outlander to China. Exports to North America at 4,271 units showed a strong 29.2 percent year-on-year increase, driven in part by a 46 percent rise in sales fueled by the new Lancer in Canada. Exports to Europe at 26,651 units were 3.6 percent down on June 2007 as strong sales in Russia and The Ukraine failed to offset sales decrease in Western European countries due to CO2 emission tax related price rises elsewhere.

January - June
Production: total and Japan
The first six months of calendar 2008 saw total global production of 691,163 units, just 0.4 percent down on the same period in 2007 and marking the first decline in three half-yearly terms. Production in Japan totaled 448,845 units, a 10.1 percent increase year-on-year, the third consecutive half-year rise and the highest level since the company spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. This owed mainly to an 11.6 percent increase in passenger car (registrations) production that was driven chiefly by a 24.4 percent increase in output of the new Lancer for Russia, the Middle East and Africa and by a 24.1 percent increase in output of the new Outlander for Europe and China.

Sales in Japan
Vehicle sales on the Japanese market in the six month period totaled 107,220 units, 12.3 percent down over last year. Passenger car sales stood at 81,334 units, 13.0 percent down on the total for January - June 2007. Commercial vehicle sales declined 10.0 percent to 25,886 units over the same period last year. Total registered car sales declined 9.8 percent and minicar sales fell 13.6 percent.

Production overseas
In Asia production declined 17.3 percent over the corresponding period last year to 155,192 units due mainly to a decrease in production of Proton models with MMC components in Malaysia, this factor more than offsetting strong increases at MMPC (39.5 percent) in the Philippines and at KRM (130.2 percent) in Indonesia. In North America production for the period fell 22.7 percent year-on-year to 32,318 units impacted by sluggish sales. In Europe production at 30,270 units was 10.6 percent down as a result of slow Colt model sales and preparation for the start of production of the new Outlander.

Export shipments from Japan

Exports from Japan posted their third consecutive half-year increase and reached the highest level since the company spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. Total shipments at 335,035 units were 20.9 percent up, with passenger cars 21.6 percent up at 327,804 units and commercial vehicles 3.6 percent down at 7,231 units.
Shipments to Europe rose a strong 45.2 percent over the January - June 2007 period to 154,548 units, driven by strong sales in Russia and The Ukraine. Shipments to North America slipped 11.8 percent to 35,207 units as overall demand fell in the domestic U.S. market. Exports to Asia rose a healthy 33.5 percent year-on-year to a total of 25,015 units driven principally by shipments of the new Outlander to China.

Audi runs in Salzburg on GTL fuel

Audi A8 GTL fuel
  • 80 Audi A8 models at the Salzburg Festival run on a new particularly eco-friendly synthetic fuel, 'GTL fuel'
  • Consistent strategy lowers fuel consumption and emissions
  • Diesel fuel made from natural gas almost completely free of sulfur and aromatics
INGOLSTADT - During the Salzburg Festival, Audi will fuel its fleet of A8 models with the eco-friendly diesel fuel GTL fuel, which is extracted from natural gas using a special technological process that liquefies the gas (Gas To Liquids). In combination with efficient TDI diesel engines, this measure enables the CO2 emissions from the Audi fleet to be reduced by around 13 percent compared to last year.

'Audi proves time and again that sporty driving and efficiency are not mutually exclusive. We are consistently lowering the fuel consumption and emissions of our cars -- throughout our entire portfolio of models, and this is where new fuels are particularly helpful,' said AUDI AG CEO Rupert Stadler. 'Our high-performance and efficient TDI and TFSI engines are the central factor for our success in this area. In running its fleet at the festival on GTL fuel, Audi is underlining its systematic approach toward sustainable mobility.'

GTL fuel is synthesised from natural gas through a chemical reaction. It is crystal clear and free of sulfur and aromatics. No sulfur dioxide emissions are produced and soot formation is lowered by 35 percent, while carbon monoxide is lowered by a full 93 percent. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are reduced by up to 30 percent and carbon dioxide (CO2) is lowered by about five percent. By combining TDI and GTL fuel, fuel consumption is lowered by about 10 percent.

And the best part: the fuel can easily be used in every Audi model with a diesel engine without any retrofitting required. The development and testing of this new fuel was the result of cooperation between Shell and Volkswagen Group Research. Three years ago, the developers of the pioneering fuel were awarded the 'Prof. Ferdinand Porsche Prize', presented by the Vienna University of Technology, the engineering accolade that comes with the highest prize money in the world.

Audi has already used GTL fuel under extreme conditions -- and with success: at the 24 hours of Le Mans race, the victorious Audi R10 with a TDI engine was filled repeatedly with a special diesel fuel mix that included large proportions of GTL fuel. It was the first time a racecar with a diesel engine won this prestigious event.

On the first weekend of the Salzburg Festival, a fleet of 80 silver Audi A8 models featuring quattro permanent four-wheel drive will be available to escort visitors. Some of the luxury sedans are equipped with a 3.0 TDI diesel engine. The six-cylinder engine generates 233 hp, but consumes just 8.5 liters of diesel per 100 km (27.67 mpg). Along with these, A8 models with a 4.2 TDI diesel engine stand at the ready. The eight-cylinder engine generates 326 hp and requires an average of 9.4 liters of diesel per 100 km (25.02 mpg).

This is not the first time that the carmaker with the four-ring logo has fuelled its fleet with GTL fuel. The entire Audi fleet at the 2008 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in January was powered by the environmentally friendly fuel

Tangible Sportiness - The ABT Passat CC

.

KEMPTEN - July 28, 2008: The abbreviation "CC" stands for “Comfort Coupé“: an elegant 4-door vehicle. “But who says that a Comfort Coupé mustn’t be sporty?” asks Hans-Jürgen Abt. The managing director of ABT Sportsline is enthused by the curved lines of the Wolfsburg vehicle, but thinks that “a bit more power would definitely suit” this stylish car. That is why the renowned Kempten-based tuner offers ABT Power packages for the CC, too. They make the coupé more dynamic, and a still more superior appearance is guaranteed.

The 1.8 TSI’s serial 160hp (118kW) are turned into mighty 200hp (147kW); thanks to ABT Power, the 2.0 TSI enjoys a power upgrade to 240hp (177kW). This turns the ABT Passat CC into a really sporty car, as the Allgäu-based tuners take care that the elegant coupé offers meatier performance also when it comes to acceleration. ABT Power will soon be available for the 2.0-TDI versions, too. Then, the diesel engine will deliver powerful 190 or 170hp (140/124kW) instead of the serial 170 and 140hp respectively (125/103kW).

The ABT experts treated the newcomer to suspension springs and a lowering of the center of gravity so that the CC can be handled optimally in every road situation. That makes the coupé look very sporty even when standing still. However, the real qualities of these components, which are perfectly tuned to the car and its character, are only revealed while driving: the ABT Passat CC loves to be driven on winding roads and remains neutral even in the limit range. Suspension springs and power upgrade set highlights when it comes to maximizing driving pleasure.

In order to round off the visual appearance of the CC, ABT Sportsline recommend their company’s wheel creations. The AR and the BR wheel rims are both available in sizes 18 to 20 inch. “It is of course a matter of taste which wheel the client prefers, but, personally, I think that the BR wheel with its corresponding spoke pairs suits the CC particularly well,” says Hans-Jürgen Abt. Of course AR and BR wheel rims are available in combination with suitable tires by the ABT partners Continental and Dunlop.

AC Schnitzer Presents The New Styling and Performance Package For BMW X6

.
AACHEN - July 28, 2008: The new BMW X6 exerts a particular form of magnetism: not only does its chassis sit perfectly on the road, it also magically attracts attention. Now it appears there is only one place where the fascination, dynamism and presence of the first Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) can be enhanced: in the workshops of AC Schnitzer in Aachen. The result is a visual and technical masterpiece which further magnifies the core qualities of the X6.

In the X6 by AC Schnitzer, the front skirt with its diagonal air intakes and repositioned fog lights are exposed. The drive-under protection has been removed in favour of a more dynamic contour of the spoiler edge. The rear carries a massive skirt with framed edges. In contrast to the original, all components are painted body-colour throughout, so the body appears downstretched and hence more dominant. Instead of the drive-under protection originally fitted here, AC Schnitzer Designer Michele Viandante has opted for a rear diffuser.

Another eyecatcher is the chromed tailpipes of the dual-flow exhaust system in AC Schnitzer Racing Design. The BMW X6 is not the only SAC in the world, but it is one of the first vehicles to be fitted with the multipiece AC Schnitzer alloy wheels Type Vll. With their black paint and tightly arranged spokes, the 22" rims present a challenging stance. The changing angles of the web pairs give an air of sophistication.

Typical AC Schnitzer: The vehicle's appearance is not misleading, but simply a reflection of its inner values. The renowned BMW tuner has developed a real firecracker under the bonnet of the diesel versions 3.0dX and 3.5dX with a new Motor Control Unit. Precise performance data will be released shortly. Of course, sheer engine power is not the only ingredient in sporting performance. So Manfred Wollgarten, Technical Director of AC Schnitzer, has developed a unique suspension spring kit for the X6 on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

One thing can be disclosed: Despite its high body, the X6 by AC Schnitzer in this configuration will show a clean pair of heels to many sports saloons. Perfect handling with corresponding Look and Feel is ensured by the "EVO" 3-spoke Sport Airbag steering wheel. With AC Schnitzer, you hold the road firmly in almost any position. The X6 by AC Schnitzer takes control on public roads as willingly as on changing terrain with varying up and down gradients!

Ford, Lincoln,Mercury products developed to run on regular fuel

2009 Lincoln MKS

DEARBORN, Mich., July 28, 2008 - With per-gallon prices hovering around $4, customers are sensitive to every penny spent at the pump, and Ford Motor Company is leveraging technologies to help consumers avoid an even further hit to their wallets. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, including luxury models like the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS, run - and run well - on regular unleaded gas, a true competitive advantage given today's skyrocketing fuel costs.

By developing vehicles that deliver both fuel efficiency and performance using regular unleaded gasoline, customers can save as much as $200 annually at the pump filling up a Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury product rather than using expensive premium unleaded fuel as some other automakers require.

Yet, recent figures from Kelley Blue Book show that the number of vehicles that either recommend or require premium fuel at an average of $0.20 or more per gallon has grown from 166 in 2002 to more than 280 today. Some luxury models on that list even warn owners they can seriously damage their engines if they consistently fill up with gas below 91 octane.

No such disclaimers or fuel requirements apply to volume Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles. Products excluding specialty performance vehicles such as the Ford Shelby GT500 can run on regular 87-octane gasoline - with great performance, said Stephen Russ, a technical leader with Ford Powertrain Operations. That includes products ranging from the 2009 Ford Mustang Bullitt to the Lincoln MKS.

"Our vehicles, including our luxury products, will run normally on 87-octane regular fuel," he adds. "Some customers may choose to use premium fuel to get additional horsepower, but our powertrains are designed so we don't have to require it."

The Lincoln MKS, equipped with the 3.7-liter V-6 and front-wheel drive, for example, delivers 275 hp and 274 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. Fill up with regular unleaded, and the luxury sedan still delivers more than 270 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, along with maintaining 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

No Knock

Thanks to Ford's improved adaptive spark ignition system, Lincoln MKS owners that fill up with regular unleaded don't have to worry about the common engine knock and pinging often associated with using a lower-grade gas.

This system can sense what type of fuel is being injected into the motor, and communicates the information to the powertrain control module (PCM), which adjusts the spark accordingly. "We have improved the algorithms and software so the vehicle's PCM is better able to figure out what fuel is being used and quickly adapt," said Russ.

In addition to software changes, the ignition system features two knock sensors rather than one to further improve performance. These two sensors detect the presence of uncontrolled burning in the chambers more accurately, so the control module can retard engine timing as needed to eliminate the potential for engine knock and pinging.

Other vehicles that feature the improved two-sensor adaptive spark ignition system include the Mustang, equipped with the 4.6-liter V-8, Mustang Bullitt and the 2009 Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner equipped with the 3.0-liter V-6.

Dollars and Sense

Running on regular versus premium represents upwards of a $200-a-year savings in fuel costs for customers. Coupled with myriad other fuel-efficient technologies offered on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, such as Ford's new six-speed automatic transmissions, customers can save even more in fuel costs without having to sacrifice performance.

For example, in addition to its six-speed transmission, the MKS features a two-speed fuel pump that alternates between two flow settings. During idle or under certain conditions such as cruising at highway speeds, the fuel pump runs on the low setting, requiring less energy to run the pump. The lower voltage results in less of a draw on the engine, improving fuel efficiency.

MKS also features Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off, a fuel-saving system that shuts off fuel flow to the injectors when the driver backs completely off the throttle with the vehicle in fifth or sixth gear, such as exiting onto a freeway off ramp.

Toyota Focusing on Metal-Air Cells for Next-Generation Battery Technology

.

TOKYO, 27 July 2008 - The Nikkei reports that Toyota's newly established department for battery research is focusing on metal-air cells as the next-generation battery technology for its vehicles.

In June at Toyota Environmental Forum in Tokyo, Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said that the company was setting out to develop an innovative next-generation battery that far outperforms lithium-ion batteries.

Watanabe was referring to what's known as a metal-air battery, according to Toyota Executive Vice-President Masatami Takimoto. In this type of battery, electricity is generated by a reaction between oxygen in the air and a metal like zinc at the negative electrode. The battery does not require the use of a combustible liquid electrolyte, so there is no danger of ignition as is the case with lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, an air battery has over fives times the energy-storage capacity of a similarly-sized lithium-ion battery...It may take some time before air batteries reach the practical stage, but Toyota believes that they will ultimately become the next-generation battery technology of choice.

...Toshiba Battery Co. has conducted research on air batteries for many years and knows their weak spot: they don't perform well when made in large sizes. Because of this experience the company has no current plans to develop air-batteries for cars. However, the company acknowledges the large latent potential. "If the performance can be improved they could end up finding use in a wide range of applications (including cars)," agreed Teiji Okayama of the technology development department.

Toyota founded a chair for research on advanced batteries at Kyoto University, and will carry out research in collaboration with chair professor Koji Nishio.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Stuart Licht at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, recently published a paper on the development of a vanadium boride (VB2)/air cell that offers an order of magnitude higher energy capacity than lithium-ion batteries.
