BANGKOK : January 20, 2009 - Mercedes-Benz has claimed the top spot in Thailand’s luxury car segment for the 8th consecutive year. Sales figures for 2008 give Mercedes-Benz a luxury car market share of 52.7 percent with unit sales of 3,807 vehicles.

Despite the global economic recession together with other factors such as the fluctuation of fuel prices and the political situations in Thailand, Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) was satisfied with its total sales volume. Professor Dr. Alexander Paufler, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) said the 2008 figures for Mercedes-Benz were an achievement for the company and it was an exceptional effort in a difficult year. “The launch of 4 new models in 2008 i.e. the new C-Class, CLC-Class Sport Coupé, the new generation SL 350 and the new generation SLK 200 enabled us to provide more variety across customer segments and lifestyles. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz has continueously introduced new technologies and innovations which increased customer confidence in the brand and allowed us to maintain our leadership for the 8th consecutive year.” “We are delighted to hold the leadership position not only in the overall figures but also as the leader in each of our categories.” Professor Dr. Paufler said. Mercedes-Benz C-Class lead for the brand with 1,714 units sold, followed by the E-Class with sales of 1,512 units and S-Class with 467 units with market share of 58.1%, 59.2% and 72.1% consequently. The breakdown for Mercedes-Benz sales in 2008 were:
  • C-Class 1,714 units were sold (58.1% of total segment sales)
  • E-Class 1,512 units were sold (59.2% of total segment sales)
  • S-Class 467 units were sold (72.1% of total segment sales)
  • A/B/M/G/R-Class altogether 114 units
“In order to be responsive to the current economic crisis, we plan to implement more aggressive marketing strategies to reinforce our sales by firstly best selecting various models to cater to different customer’s needs. Moreover, we at Mercedes-Benz offer environmentally friendly vehicles,” added Professor Dr. Paufler.

“E 200 KOMPRESSOR NGT is a perfect alternative for whoever is looking for an environmentally friendly car as it is euipped with bivalent drive system that enables drivers to smoothly switch from petrol power to natural-gas mode at any time. It is very impressive to know that our sales for this model gained the highest market share accounting for 50 percent in the category.”

In 2009 we plan to offer customers more exciting vehicles such as E 220 CDI Classic, E 230 2.5 AV Sports Premium Edition and ML 280 CDI Sports new generation. In particular, the Mercedes-Benz flagship model, the S 500 L CKD (completely knock-down unit) started successfully from its launch last year and remained unchallenged market leader in Thailand with performance and safety perfectly combined with luxury and elegance, for which Mercedes-Benz is famed. Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) has won “Mercedes-Benz Quality Award CKD” from its Headquarters in Germany. The award was the guarantee of global quality of standard for Mercedes-Benz Assembly Plants which are located in 7 countries around the world i.e. India, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Thailand.

“At present, there are various Mercedes-Benz models being built in Mercedes-Benz Assembly Plant such as S-Class, E-Class and C-Class. All cars are produced with the same standard as in Germany which has proven the quality of Thai engineers and the high level industrial technology being used in Thailand.” Professor Dr. Paufler said.

In addition to the quality of product, Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) very much focuses on after sales service. The company has continuously developed service management systems for its authorized dealers nationwide which has resulted in higher scores on the Customer Satisfaction Index.

With the above competency and our brand mission in product development we are strongly confident of maintaining the leader position in luxury car segment in the coming year, Professor Dr. Paufler said.
