FAW-VW to Launch “Kaili” Brand EV

Volkswagen Bora blue-e motion

FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., a 60:40 joint venture between Volkswagen AG and China's FAW Group Corp., will build an electric vehicle for the partnership's newly created brand.

The EV will be the first vehicle launched for Kaili, the joint venture's new brand, according to the production plan submitted to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Further details about the EV have yet to be disclosed.

Beijing has been encouraging global automakers to allow their joint ventures to create new brands. These brands would give their Chinese partners more opportunities to learn about vehicle development.

For example, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. has launched sales of its own Baojun-brand compact sedan, which is based on the Buick Excelle's platform.

Likewise, Honda Motor Co.'s joint venture, Guangqi Honda Automobile Co., has begun selling its Everus-brand compact car. The Everus was developed on the Honda Fit platform.

And Nissan's joint venture, Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co., unveiled its Venucia brand last month at the Shanghai auto show.
