BYD to supply electric buses to Frankfurt

SHENZHEN : June 21, 2011 - BYD Co. says it has signed a letter of intent with the government of Frankfurt to deliver three electric buses to the German city.

Under the tentative agreement, BYD will provide the buses and two charging stations in the first quarter of 2012, BYD said in a statement.

The buses will be used as shuttles at Frankfurt's airport and public transportation routes to the city's Gateway Gardens.

The electric buses, which are called the K9 in China and the eBUS-12 in Germany, were built in the central China city of Changsha.

They are 12 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, and powered by BYD's lithium ion batteries. They have a range of 250 kilometers with a maximum speed of 70 km per hour.

Frankfurt is the second overseas purchaser of BYD's electric bus. In March, the Chinese automaker agreed to supply two buses to Copenhagen.

BYD also is negotiating the sale of electric buses to the governments of Chile and Peru.
